What is planned for MAGFest?
Hey! Many of the same guests and groups come each year, but sometimes things beyond our control happen and guests can't attend. We try to keep this page updated, but it isn't necessarily a guaranteed list.
If you're a videogame developer, musician, or artist, you do cool stuff that has something to do with videogames, click here and get in touch. Event HighlightsDISCUSSIONS and PANELSWant to know where videogame artists and musicians get their inspiration? Looking to find out how programmers make those video games tick? Got a question for a videogame remixer? Dying for some intelligent videogame talk with folks that write game articles? Drum up a chat with our special guests at the discussions and get a better idea of what's going on behind the scenes.24 HOUR GAME ROOMOur game room has expanded! Tournaments are now held in a separate area so that our huge (10 000 square foot) gameroom can be more populated with freeplay games you love. How many times have you gone to a convention and the game room closed early, or opened late? Well, not at MAGFest! Our game room is open each year for the entire fest! Enjoy your favorite games on dozens of systems around the clock! If you don't see the game you want to play, request it!
TOURNAMENTSThink you've got what it takes to compete? Try your hand at a smattering number of games against people that think they're the best, and find out who really is! The most popular tournament requests include (note we've left a lot of blanks to honor all releases and revisions of games, old and new):
Signups for each tournament will be held in the Videogame room during the festival, so be sure to stop by the staff table there and sign up for the games you want to play - if there aren't enough signups for a game, one tournament may be cancelled to make room for another. 24 HOUR LAN ROOMJust like our game room, our LAN center is open 24 hours! The separate LAN area this year will provide extra juice from the hotel so the power won't go out. This will also be in an area that provides gamers with more gaming privacy, a bit less noise (headphones required), and more room for us to expand if necessary. Our LAN will have a few of our own machines, but we highly recommend bringing a PC with the games you want to play already installed on it so you have a seat! We'll be tagging in the LAN center as well, and PCs can be set up for public or private use at MAGFest.24 HOUR VIDEO ROOMWith the exception of projector breaks, we'll be running as many videos as we can find! Relive your childhood or discover new series that you didn't know you were missing! Old school and new stuff alike! Don't worry, we'll have Captain N episodes again! And tons more game commercials from our friends at GameAds!AUCTIONLooking for a rare, well cared for system? Got an arcade machine to sell? Just want to check out what people have to offer? Drop in on the MAGFest auction for a taste of what kind of goodies people want to sell, or let us know at the beginning of the convention if you have something you would like auctioned and we'll get you the details.COSTUME CONTESTWanna wear a costume to MAGFest? Go right ahead! Dressed as your favorite videogame character, you can show off all your costume-making skills to the rest of the crowd, or if you'd like, you can participate in the costume contest, which is just a bit different from most other 'cosplay' events. Judges randomly selected and hijinks aplenty, this ought to be an entertaining show.MusicCONCERTSMAGFest, by many, has long been revered as a game music mecca. Video game bands from all over the country have come to play. We guarantee you'll be able to rock out to tons of talented artists and we try to keep this as fresh as possible so you can hear something new each year. In our early years, MAGFest started out with three bands. But we've expanded just a bit, and now we have three nights of concert!Video effects at the concert will be provided by NO CARRIER who creates unique visuals using NES decks. Combining custom software and circuit bending, he'll light up the stage with an 8-bit barrage of graphical glitches and pure pixel goodness. NEW YEAR'S EVE EXCLUSIVEWe can't get the whole hotel Wednesday night, but we'll still be able to set up a few areas. So, we're blocking off the Jamspace and LAN areas from last year for a little New Year celebration. If you come early, we have a special treat planned for preregistrants....the debut performance of Autoscroll. Members of Cheap Dinosaurs, Animal Style, and Brown Recluse Sings have joined forces for the ultimate chiptune mashup group, and they'll be performing originals plus video game covers. Once you combine live instrumentation with sound from actual classic video game systems (no emulation here) onstage, MAGFest will be set to autoscroll, and there's no turning back. THURSDAY NIGHT in the Concert Hall (fallback to JamSpace; order is final):ARMADILLO TANK (PIENESS), RARE CANDY, YEAR 200X, THE MEGAS, ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM, FRIDAY NIGHT in the Concert Hall (order is final):PLANET SKILL, THIS PLACE IS HAUNTED, TEMP SOUND SOLUTIONS SATURDAY NIGHT in the Concert Hall (order is final):ARMCANNON, THE SMASH BROTHERS, METROID METALHey, how about a list of the bands that have played MAGFest and some links to their sites? ADVANTAGE, ARMADILLO TANK (PIENESS), ARMCANNON, ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM, EVERYONE (the band), INHERETICS, JENOVA PROJECT, METROID METAL, MINIBOSSES, NESKIMOS, ONE-UP MUSHROOMS, PARASPRINTER, POWERGLOVE, RARE CANDY, SEARCH SNAKE, SELECT START, SHAEL RILEY, TEMP SOUND SOLUTIONS, SPRITE SLOWDOWN (CHROMELODEON), THE MEGAS, THE SMASH BROTHERS, THIS PLACE IS HAUNTED, PLANET SKILL (WAVE THEORY), YEAR 200XEven if a band ends up not playing, there is a good chance you'll see them at the festival! JAMSPACEAt M6 we tried something a little different...a concert area where anyone could just come in and pick up an instrument, or bring their own, and jam with their buddies (or even the people already in there). We heard all kinds of things performed live, from OC ReMixes, to Metroid Metal (as a band!), to live rickrolling, to a live chiptune concert from our pal and game composer Virt. This year it will be back and better than ever! We'll be adding more shows with game composers to the room, and get this, we might even be more organized!VIDEO GAME COMPOSERS AND MUSICIANSHOWARD DROSSINIn the golden age of the Sega Genesis, Howard brought us soundtracks for Comix Zone, Sonic 3, Spinball, and Knuckles. He continued, working for Activision and Interplay, and writing music for Vigilante 8 and Baldur's Gate 2. Back in the day, Drossin helped Sega pioneer the sale of video game music in the US with the Sega Tunes series. Howard will be sharing his experience at Sega as well as a few new game music surprises.JAKE 'VIRT' KAUFMANPrepare to rock and eat tacos, because Jake Kaufman is making his return! Always on an adventure, Jake has now relocated to Illinois and is doing Audio Design for Volition (the guys behind Red Faction and Freespace, and Descent for us fogies that remember Parallax). By MAGFest, there will be plenty of stories to tell. Ask him about his new puggle, Nugget!GRANT KIRKHOPEEven though he thinks he'll be relatively unknown at MAGFest, almost everyone present has heard this man's work on titles such as GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, or Banjo-Kazooie on the N64, or perhaps Viva Piñata on the 360. He'll be giving a panel and talking about his work from the days of Rare to his present times at Big Huge Games. Ask him about metal!OVERCLOCKED REMIX, MUSIC COMMUNITYOverClocked ReMix is back again. Now to prepare JamSpace for an OCR takeover once again....TOMMY TALLARICOTommy Tallarico is known for doing a lot of composing and sound design on classic and modern titles alike.
