Welcome!

Hey guys, welcome to the games subsection!

This'll be the first post about LAN in specific.

LAN this year is looking to be pretty awesome, similar to last.

LANman 1 of 3.

Is it Bring-Your-Own-Computer? Security?

So, for the LAN, is there going to be a row of computers already set up for this (if they're rented from a LAN gaming company), or will we have to bring our own computers? Desktops will be kind of hard to move around and slow to set up.

If we bring our own computers, what are the chances of anything happening to them if we take a bathroom break?

LAN parties in general have

LAN parties in general have been going on for years, and everyone carts their huge ultra l33t desktop machines with them. it works. its not as bad as you think, especially now that everyone's got LCD screens.

bringing a laptop is an option of course, and now that gaming laptops are semi-reasonably priced, thats pretty popular at LAN parties too.

as for security, there is of course always a risk, and if you absolutely cannot live without your computer, you should never let it out of your sight. =] in the 6 years we've been doing magfest, we've only had 1 incident of serious computer theft, and that took a bunch of dumb mistakes all around, on the part of both magfest and the owner of the computer. that was a few years ago, and security is much better now. all equipment gets checked in and out, and there is a staffer guarding the door at all times.

we may have public gaming machines. this is something i've been trying to do for years, but we've never managed. every year we get closer. i can't promise much this year, but we will have at least 2 public gaming machines, and hopefully a lot more. if we confirm anything, i'll keep you posted.

I may...

I may bring my laptop and game it up a little.

What tournaments usually attract attention?

I know Starcraft 2 should be out by then.. At least I think its a fall game...

???

Welcome to DIE!

What Games

Just regarding the games, will there be anything set up like tournaments for certain games or will it just be play whatever-you-and-everyone-else-has?

Maybe we could get a list going of what people have?

lan has more of a skeleton structure

Typically we try to provide tournaments in ultra-popular games and/or stuff we know everyone will have/can get. In the past, Soldat, CS, Doom, Quake, and Starcraft have been pretty huge. But really your best bet is to bring what you've got and we'll try to structure a tournament around things lots of people have or at least lots of people want to play.

I'm thinking TF2 will be a no-brainer, for example.

UT2k4!

Can't forget Unreal Tournament. 2k4 saw a fair amount of gameplay at M6. Somebody must have really enjoyed the Redeemer Arena Onslaught server I put up because a few minutes after putting it up I heard someone shout "whoever put up this 'for the lulz' server, I love you!"

Structured tournaments

Id like to see some more structured tournaments this years, get some friendly competition going.

And i know @ M6 we eventually got a internal torrent server/tracker going for distributing games, dont know if we can do that again but that would help with getting games out to whoever wants to play them.

The problem with bittorrent

The problem with bittorrent was outside of a couple games nobody seeded their torrents. They just threw the torrent file up on the tracker and went about their business, probably unaware that nobody could actually obtain whatever they just torrented.

BT

i only used it for Quake wars and it actually worked out pretty well, but ya seeders is always a problem. depending on what the network setup is like id be more then happy to loan a couple machines purely for seeding, and or Tourament hosting
