Just so you know....
We're starting to think about a second MAGFest-related event (again). We had this idea a few years back post-MAGFest 3, but we didn't really have the resources to pull it off. Before you ask, regular MAGFest will stay MAGFest, and we want to keep that special, so this is going to be a different kind of event. If going to this would prevent you from going to the big MAGFest, we'd rather you do that instead of this. This event is not intended to interfere with or replace the main MAGFest in any way.
Spread this poll. This our official interest page; it is NOT linked anywhere on the site. We want it to spread by word of mouth and see exactly how popular it would be before we expose it to the rest of the world/site. Since we do not even have a gauge of how many people would be interested in this, we will not even be looking at dates until this poll crosses the 200 mark.
So, what does this entail? Well, there'd be showers/bathrooms, and probably enough electricity to hook up systems or TVs in individual Tent/RV/Cabin sites. MAGFest would only provide a few setups, and everyone else would bring stuff that THEY want to show off or play. There would probably be a LOT of music (bands that we haven't been able to get to MAGFest, for example) and not a whole lot of other events or panels scheduled except for maybe a workshop or two. People would be encouraged to roam around, meet people, play games with eachother, have cookouts, and generally have a good time in the "great outdoors".
This could be cool, but I am
This could be cool, but I am not sure exactly how it would pan out. How are we going to get the electricity for bands and games while camping? I mean we can use portable sources, but MAGFest uses a ton of electricity and I don;t know if we'll have enough or how much it would cost.
Less electricity
Well, the description does say that MAGFest would provide only a few setups, so it's probably not going to need as much electricity.
Orrrrrrrrrrrrr
Just see the part where I said "we'll have enough electriticty to hook up games at tent/campsites. =] This is where it's going to be different, don't visualize MAGFest, visualize "MAGstock". People can set up a TV and a system or two at their own campsite, and it encourages people to go to eachothers' sites, mingle with eachother, and play whatever folks brought.
YES!
You had me at "Enough Electricity". All and all, this sounds awesome and I would love to do something like this when I get back to the states.
Unplugged
I think there's a lot of potential for a MAGFest Unplugged (or moderately plugged). It would open up the possibility for a lot more non-digital games: Board games, card games, social games, new games, big games, etc.
And lots of Dicktochat on the DS.
I'm certainly interested, it just all depends on when and where it is.
thats why I dont have a DS
thats why I dont have a DS anymore too much dick drawings in pictochat
BACCHANALIA
Sounds like good ol' Lord-of-the-Flies-style fun.
camping fun
what about the possiblity of a bon fire or roasting marshmallows while telling ghost stories? think we can get someone to dress up Kumbayah (sp)? I really love this idea!
of course!
obviously there would be a camp fires. a bonfire is anyone's guess. I know I'll be having a nightly or even daily little campfire to roast some marshmallows and hot dogs. of course everything is is BYO. so haul in fire wood, food, drink, children. you get the picture.
If you're particularly averse to cooking there is a dominos in town that will meet you halfway or will come to the campground if a large order is placed. so bring cash to make pooling funds for pizza.
Camp Nowhere
anyone remember the movie "Camp Nowhere"? I had a sudden thought that this might be like that :-)
Especially since there is Computer Camp and Band Camp in there :-D
Sounds like a renfaire
Sounds like a geeky (er) high tech renfaire. =) I can just picture vendor booths set up like a marketplace in WoW or something. And imagine the LARPers! XD I'd go. =) If we tok over a KOA, that'd solve power issues. If there are showers, I'm sure there'd be power too.
Welcome to MAGstock.
i'm already there
see you when you get here.
I definitely couldn't make it
I definitely couldn't make it to this, but I love the idea. My friends back in high school actually did a geek campout like this once (on a small scale though, obviously) so I know it could work, and it would be awesome.

my friends do these setups all the time for russian festivals
are you looking at a particular campground already?
there's these russian music camping festivals. the traditional music style is almost-poetry-set-to-acoustic, but these modern ones definitely have elaborate DIY PA/mic setup under various tarps, with musicians getting switched in and out every couple songs. i am involved in errands such as merch, doors, and designated driving with these folks, and am going to be at the house of the organizer of

this weekend so i can ask them some questions about setting up shelter both for people and for equipment if you need to know something specific, either now or later, although i am sure you could also find out plenty from the mutantfest site (never been to mutantfest myself but they do a mostly electronic festival on a site with no hookups of any kind).

most of the campsites these are held at are various places in upstate NY and mid-PA...that might be kind of a haul for people. Oh! actually one that is on the Maryland beach (but not Eastern shore, more like the southern tip of MD with little islands) is

don't let the cheesy name and the high quoted rates fool you, the owner is super laid back and most people just come in without paying anything. there are both large cottages where machines could be put, and dozens of people could sleep, tents that are already set up, and tons of space to put your own tents.
if we need more tents, i or anyone else who is an alumni of university of MD college park can rent some quality tents for cheap at the UMD outdoor recreation center. and i'm sure tons of folks have pennsic tents that they don't use during pennsic.

I like that last bit always
I like that last bit always great to have the openminded on our side for something of this scale
Any new information?
Just wondering how this is starting to look as becoming a reality. Would very much like to start planning time off to make it there. :)
we could all pitch in and
we could all pitch in and bring stuff and even look for a place to do this.
Lets do it
So why haven't we planned this yet. Need a hand in this MrMagStock?
If this doesn't get done this
If this doesn't get done this year, maybe it could be looked at and planned for for next summer. I would still love to do this and am willing to pitch in to make it happen :-)
Every events of Magfest has
Every events of Magfest has been remarkable. Camping+Games+Music is the total combination of recreation and fun to enjoy with family and friends. Spring and early fall is probably the best time to go out on picnic and organize some outdoor events. We usually go for Swing Sets Nashville with families and friends on this particular time.
