MAGFest 12

The 12th Annual Music And Gaming Festival
4 Days of Non-Stop Games and Concerts

Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center
201 Waterfront Street
National Harbor, MD 20745
Jan 2 -5, 2014 (Thu - Sun)

MAGFest 9 will be Thu-Sun. We may move away from New Year's. Your opinion?

Leave it on the New Year (30 Dec 2010 - 2 Jan 2011)! This is close to Christmas, New Year's would be in the MIDDLE of MAGFest.

Shoot for a weekend after that (current possibility: 13-16 Jan 2011). It may conflict with classes but you'd get family time.

I have absolutely no opinion. I can make either weekend, I will make it to MAGFest no matter what.

Go go gadget NYE

New Years eve is best because otherwise I have classes that get in the way. :(

New Years

I always enjoyed starting the New Year off at MAGfest, makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. I agree it will screw with the people who have classes, I always have that weekend off. So do a lot of my employed friends. Though, I understand that it may be easier to do the following weekend because of family/travel issues.

I look forward to it no matter when it is though!

new years

we have to do this on new years. it is my christmas. my vacation. my sanity. i mean come on now people we don't want to break the trend now do we?

While the New Years Eve thing

While the New Years Eve thing was cool, I think it'd be better later in the month of January. First of all, it's less likely to interfere with family obligations and it'll be a bit cheaper for those that have to travel.

yeah later in january please.

I too would prefer to move it a bit from new years. NYE was freaking incredible. I just would like some breather time between dealing with family and jumping head long into magfest. I also imagine that for the organizers that it would be a welcome buffer as well.

Agreed!

It would be a lot easier to travel/plan for a Con that was not Directly on NYE.

Two Weeks Later!

I work at a bank, so two weeks after works a lot better for me (Not that New Year's has stopped me the past several years...).

THESHIZZ!

I love the new years

I love the new years weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't let it drag onto Monday next year though, everyone was too exhausted by then to leave happy. (Grouchy Monday.) Thursday - Sunday is perfect.

See you next year! <3

I can definitely understand

I can definitely understand the ease for traveling. But also need to question turnout for the non-weekend days because of school and work.

Move it between.

I'm going to preface this with the fact that I did not make it to the New Year's Bash.

I think ideally would be the first weekend to not include New Years, in this case 6th-9th. New Years is no doubt a good time, but I think too many still have plans. Personally, I have an annual party with friends that I don't want to miss. Magfest is still Magfest without a New Year's party. Not to mention this year with Friday being the first full day of the fest, everyone was tired and/or hungover, which made setting up some events even more hectic.

On the other hand, I do think moving too far away means college students have classes to go back to, people have work move back up to full swing, everyone shifts out of Party Mode. That's why I say as soon after New Years as possible, but not including it. Ideally I'd say always start on the 2nd, but sticking to the weekend is obviously better.

Edit: and while it's early on the poll, the Neck-and-Neck voting makes me think a compromise between the two is best.

Don't get me wrong, Magfest New Years sounds a great party. And the fest as a whole is a great way to bring in the new year. If it does land on the New Year I'll have some thinking to do about what gets priority.

Edit again: Oh shit, Martin Luther King Day in 2011 is on Monday, the 17th of January. Probably why you guys chose that weekend. Now I see why you guys chose that weekend. I still stand by the first weekend, but recovery time is always a factor.

One of the ways this event is

One of the ways this event is unique is that it is the only major event on any fannish calendar on New Year Weekend. Having a day off during the festival was a factor in me coming. That is a reason why I chose this event. If you can get as good of a rate on MLK weekend, I would still come. It may be Saturday and Sunday only, but would still come.

New Year's Eve

It was great starting off MAGFest with New Year's Eve.

With New Year's Eve in the middle I wonder if that would cause problems, not just with classes, but with attendies and guests that might have other plans for New Year's Eve. Just as the convention would get started, a holiday in the middle of MAGFest may have a negative impact on the event. That still leaves Saturday and Sunday as full days though.

Either way is good for me personally.

OC ReMix people

I am bLiNd's wife, Jade. We are from OC ReMix. We live in Las Vegas, NV and making it to that holiday is tough for us. We couldn't make it to Magfest 8 because of the dates. It makes plane tickets really expensive. I hope you guys could consider the 13-16. We would have a better chance to go.

Agreed with Addendum.

I am a lucky as hell College student in that my classed don't start until the very end of Janurary.

However, next year I was definitely having second thoughts becuase I want to be able to spend NYE with family, and I definitely would not go if NYE were in the middle of the Con. :-(

But I'm only one guy.

???

This is a signature. Magfest rocks.

Even as much as I enjoy

Even as much as I enjoy spending NYE at MagFest, I'm pretty sure I'd go regardless of the dates. Plus if it allows you and bLiNd to make it, the later weekend has my vote. Definitely missed you guys this year!

Thoughts on Dates

I absolutely don't like either of those dates, but New Years I'd at least be able to make. The other date is too close to when classes start as to preclude me from being able to go because I'm a graduate student who teaches. Ideally the weekend in between those dates would be perfect :/ .

please no more New Year's

Not NYE or New Year's, please. If you have a significant other that doesn't go to MAGFest, it's a pretty big hassle to convince them that you'd rather go hang out with a bunch of your nerd friends than them.

Plus, like someone else mentioned, it makes plane tickets really expensive. I understand that the hotel is more likely to cooperate around that time, but with as big as it's gotten, I don't think the Hilton will really have much of a problem moving the date.

Exactly! The compromise I

Exactly! The compromise I made with my spouse is they get me for NYE and then I get to go to MAG. While the situation is tricky for school folks with it starting later, having NYE right in the middle can be tricky for a different set of people. It also helps take off some pressure of ZOMGHOLIDAYS. Tough call but I'd love to see how things go with a later time slot. It can always move back the next year if things don't work out.

Thanks Brendan! You rock!

I fail to understand how

I fail to understand how classes could interfere with a weekend event. I don't know how other places are, but in California (where I'm from) the majority of classes are Mon-Thur, with a very limited amount of Fri, and even fewer (if any?) on weekends. In that case, one could easily fly out Thursday night, which is what my girlfriend had to do for M6 because her store has a strict policy about not allowing people to take time off near holidays, hence why I've missed two Magfests (and I'll miss a third if it's over New Years again). And really, it would most likely be the first week of school anyway, what could you possibly miss? You could just as easily write your professor, make up some stupid excuse about some family thing, and simply miss a fucking day. I think that's a much better compromise than people not being able to go at all because it interferes with family traditions and celebrations, as having it on New Years does. Plus, it's much cheaper to travel after the holidays rather than right between Christmas and New Years.

Re: I fail to understand how

When you have obligations as a graduate student, it's a whole different ballgame. You're not expected to miss any class you teach unless you're sick, family emergency, or a conference you're attending/presenting, especially at a university like mine where we have such prestige. In addition, professors meet with the students working for him/her that semester a few days beforehand to get everything straightened out. Taking vacations isn't necessarily the easiest thing to do when you're continually doing research, especially when the expectation is that your research isn't to stop when you're on break. Taking time off for the holidays is already bad enough in some instances. Taking time off so close to when the actual semester starts and when you're supposed to be back into full swing? Yeah, I rather refrain from irking people further involved in my future career-wise unless I absolutely have to, especially when I've already had other issues happen & affect my progress (family & personal health) that has seem to be happening at an increasing rate in the past year.

i agree with wizwars

well said

or...if you are a grad

or...if you are a grad student AND you help run magfest, having mag on the 13th becomes an impossibility. Either you are screwed royally by school (as missing 1 class could mean a grade reduction by a few points) or mag misses out on some of its staff.
Just because some people can get around it doesn't mean that's a possibility for everyone.

I agree entirely, as this is

I agree entirely, as this is my exact situation. Please keep the dates the same.

Also, many of our panel guests are still students and changing the date would place a big hardship on whether or not they would be able to attend.

I had plenty of sat classes

I had plenty of sat classes in college.

oh darn

I already put in my vote before the third option was available. But i do like the idea of the weekend after new years. it's a happy medium between the two and works well with both work and school because you either have not started up yet or you are not too far in and don't feel as guilty for taking the time off. As long as I can find out the dates as soon as possible so that i can go ahead and request time off, then i'm happy. :-)

I can't wait and would love to know what i can do to help out again. :-D

Oh! almost forgot, will it be the same location or is that not decided yet?

These are are date

These are are date negotiations with the same Hotel. While there were some....unfortunate incidents, the Hilton on the whole loves Magfest and Magfest loves 'em right back.

School

Personally, I (and I'm sure many others) wouldn't be able to go to the later date due to school. Granted I might just get down there anyway, but it would be easier if it didn't interfere with classes and such.

Uhhh. Leave it please?

This would conflict with school so, I'd love to come back next year without having to miss class. :\

ehh..

i'm kind of leaning towards not having it on new years, you may be shooting yourselves in the foot with that, but it may be better because people are already off for new years and such..I'm as torn as you all are. I'll be happy as long as it's thursday for the extra day and not monday : \

I prefer it over NYE -

I prefer it over NYE - MAGfest is the best new year celebration!

I agree with bahamut, the

I agree with bahamut, the weekend inbetween those dates is probably best. Plane tickets are madd expensive for new years, and their a lot of people that have school the 13th, so probably the weekend before. If I had to choose from those dates, the 13th would work better

bah!

At least you can MISS class and not pay $500 to fly out to Magfest. =P

Goodness! Buy your tickets in

Goodness! Buy your tickets in advance, $500 is crazy! XD I recommend starting your search as soon as you can register, (hopefully as soon as the dates are confirmed). Even on holidays, you'll save money! =)

numba 1

The 2nd option would be near impossible for me in almost any scenerio. The first option is already on vacation time, and I don't do anything worth while on NYE anyway.

I honestly understand

I honestly understand everyone's arguments for not doing MAGFest on NYE but my classes begin that same week that MAGFest would begin. Itrs not a big deal since I would still come, but I would miss the first day or so because of classes :(.

I prefer NYE because I am definitely off during those days.

Conflicts regardless of dates.

No matter what dates MAGFest is held on there will somehow be a conflict for someone. In my case, doing the sudden New Years travel was a slight bit of a pain. I had to take time off work during a time that I really should not have, granted it did end up working out ok this time. For students, moving it away from New Years may be an issue because of classes, but for those of us in career jobs or jobs of any kind that have difficulty getting certain holiday times off it would be better to move the date away from New Years.

I'm all for finding a way for everyone to be able to attend, but considering how my life is and that I'm not a student, I have to vote in favor of what works for me. It was fantastic to be able to attend MAGFest again, and I would love to be able to do it again.

Whatever the outcome of the dates I'll still do what I can to make it.

I can't miss

I can't miss classes...especially not the first ones like that. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't make magfest later.

lolno

I will have class by then so I fully object to having M9 moved forward. D:

My thoughts

I like the idea of having NYE in the middle of Magfest, but either set of dates is good for me. As much as I like my classes, I don't mind leaving them for a short amount of time.

I'm for shortening the weekend back down to 3 or 4 days. I actually ended up leaving early due to complete exhaustion and was glad for the extra recovery day. But that's just my opinion.

I think the extra time was

I think the extra time was INVALUABLE. People who had to leave, still can, but it's like getting an extra Saturday to attendees and vendors alike. =)

Eh. Everyone mentions classes

Eh. Everyone mentions classes but when you work in retail you are all but screwed around holidays. anywhere NEAR Christmas you cant take off and new years is when most holiday help is let go..... either way just ask off early enough and you might get it.

as for skoo kids...... petition to have skoo start later. its MAGFEST. they will understand.

go for whatever the hotel and you guys agree on. and this year i will not let someone's wedding get in the way.

Re: Classes

I mentioned why earlier why this is an impossibility for some, including me.

Would be the last semester of my senior year...

I couldn't possibly miss class on the first week unless I didn't have class at all those two days, which would never happen.
Class starts on the 10th for me, and if it's moved beyond that, I can't go... at all...

No better way to spend NY

There's no better or safer way to ring in the New Year. Good friends, music, drinks, parties, and no need to drive at all! MAGFEST SAVES LIVES! =)

no feelings either way

I don't go to school right now, so I don't have to worry about classes starting up. I'm an independent contractor, and my pay is milestone-based on a month-by-month basis, so if I miss a weekend out of the month, it's no big deal.

I'm coming to MAGFest regardless.

I'd like to spend the new

I'd like to spend the new year with friends who aren't con-goers. While New Years is fun, there are plenty of parties to go around in MAGfest, so you could always have a belated New Year.

Also, to Mr. MAGfest, congrats on an awesome job. It was my first time and I had a blast! :D

Keep it on NYE

Loved the dates this year. I fly out from Sacramento and am always able to find flights for around ~$100 a way. This year I flew back on the 10th after staying with some friends, and the cost went down significantly. I'd be more apt to do something like that if it ended on the 2nd (you mean 3rd anyway right? right?) and I suggest the same to anyone who is flying. Push back your personal leaving date a couple days and you'll save some money.

My only suggestion is if we can get more formal attire for the NYE party ;D Not enough people were fancied up!

Would rather have it after

Would rather have it after New Years as opposed to directly surrounding it. I usually have other plans for NYE and pretty much don't go out New Years day (unless I'm on vacation someplace). I wouldn't want to miss the majority of the festival because of this.

Leave it on New Years!

I have school later on with maybe exams, so the only way I can go is if it's at the end of Winter Break. The dates on 8 were perfect, and I could come for most of the days. And if you do it from the 30th to Jan 2, that's even more amazing since there won't be day that falls on Monday, and this would make my friends and I super happy. Because I sure convinced a bunch of people to come next year! :D
