MAGFest Mid-Summer Night's Convention?

Just an idea, but why not have a second MAGFest, taking place during the middle of the year? (If it did take place this year, it would land somewhere between July 1st and 2nd, right around the Fourth of July weekend.) And hey, if you can have a New Year's Eve party, why not have a "Mid-Year's Eve" party as well?

Ironically

... I was thinking the same thing just tonight. So much awesomeness is hard to wait for all year long, but I understand the logistics, especially for getting all the arcade and console gear....

I think that would be great.

I think that would be great. If for no other reason than to not have it be balls ass freezing (although this year was unusually bad cold).

Meh.

I've never much liked this "let's have another Magfest" idea. Yes, it would fix some issues, but it would create a whole host more, especially since if we're going to do two we might as well do one on the west coast, and at that point it will probably be different people attending it and the attendance will be split up. Actually, many people probably can't afford two Magfests a year time- or money-wise and so even without a different location there will be fewer attendees. This will be a lot more feasible once we get a LOT more attendees, like maybe.. hm.. how many were at PAX last year?

PAX 2009's Attendance Numbers

About 60750 people were in attendance at PAX 2009.

By comparison, Katsucon 2008 had slightly more than 1/10th of PAX 2009's attendees (about 6300).
(Note that Katsucon 2009 had a 6000-attendee cap, thus the reason why I'm using a nearby con without any limits for this comparison.)

"Isn't it funny how, outside the world of the Muppets, if you call a woman a pig or a guy a frog, you're asking to get decked?"

How about no.

I rather have it stay early in the year. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Yeah, I like what someone

Yeah, I like what someone said on Facebook about it being the "Alpha and Omega" of cons by being held over New Year's. Something about it being a bit harder to get to and needing a little more extra devotion, and the heightened emotions of the holiday season, it all adds up to give it that special vibe of awesome.

(Also, thanks to the bitter cold and the difficulty of getting back up to my room with the hotel elevators being so crowded and slow, this year I was mentally comparing the experience to making the climb up Mt. Gagazet, actually...)

HECK YES!

THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!!! I almost froze my butt off at this Magfest! Plus, It being in the summer I think would have a bigger attraction. People tend not to want to go to conventions on New years.. We don't need to have two conventions a year.. Just plan the next one to be later in 2011..

No mannnnnnnnn, if there are

No mannnnnnnnn, if there are more MAGfests, then the staff will all have nervous breakdowns and then there will be no MAGfest :( Better one fest so the staff can all concentrate on one festival

I don't want two events or

I don't want two events or even a much later in the year event. If Magfest is too close to Katsucon, then those who are Gaming and Anime fans would have to choose one, the other or cut back on their spending at both. This is the best time of year for Magfest. If you have two events, you would greatly grow the event staff. They want to keep it affordable for the fans who do make it and a second one could be drain on resources. This is someone who reads too much on the chat and not from a staff opinion.

Keep It

I think the timing is just perfect. Those in school are on break. Those that work are also on break. It means less time to take off from work. Anyone that gets money for Christmas has that available to spend. And it's an excuse to run away from the family feuds of the holidays. The New Year's Eve party to kick things off is fantastic. This was my first time, but I would change the time of year at all. And like it says on one of the pages, it's the perfect type of weather for staying inside and playing some games. I agree with the logic behind what 2 a year would do. Until the money, the staff, and the attendance is high enough to support 2, I say keep it as it is. :)

lol

We've actually been jokingly talking about doing this for a few years now, and there are some businesses here in Richmond that have actually approached me about wanting to do it completely independently.
But it's really nice to see that there are other people out there in our community that have been pondering it as well. We'll see what happens.

Dont worry

All of the highest level magfest important people all say there will not be a second magfest. There are a few reasons for this. It takes alot of work to organize getting guests and promotions and a whole lot of behind the scenes stuff to pull off magfest. The infrastructure just isnt there to have a second magfest in a year.

III_Demon said it him self "A midyear magfest would cheapen what magfest is and I will not do it."

Dont get me wrong it would be nice to see magppl more then once a year but a second magfest is just not the answer. However what you can do is arrange some sort of meetup of people who attend magfest and have it in the summer. I believe you can recapture the social element of magfest that way. It would be like an unofficial hang out thing. I think if you did that you would meet alot less resistance.

i said that? i dont remember

i said that? i dont remember saying anything firm about a summer magfest event. personally i'm planning on growing magfest till its a year long and covers the entire globe. ... but theres a time and place for things, and we're not ready for a second event yet. soon, maybe. just not yet.

could be in the works

nothing official is going on in this department, but if we have a second magfest, it will be a different event with a different feel than magfest. we definitely want to keep the magfest that already exists special. if we provide something new, we don't want to just recycle the event into a summer gathering with the same stuff going on. this is already happening with other events and people are starting to feel like it gets stale. one year is a good enough period of time that people can save up if necessary and also enough time for us to get together new, original happenings for each year.

I totally approve of this

I totally approve of this idea. Its hard for such an awesome event like this waiting till the end of the year. <3
