Magfest, question to previous attendees about beer and sleeping.

Hey guys. This will be my first time attending Magfest. This may sound stupid, but oh well. My question is, is it even possible to sleep in your room? I'm just imagining complete pandemonium and insanity in the hallways and rooms, and I'd hate to pay 100 bucks for a room if I can't even sleep in it lol. I'm all about a good time, and I like to drink when i party, so If I'm walking around with a beer in my hand, am I gonna get escorted out or somethin? I know, stupid to ask, but just wondering.

You can not have an open beer

You can not have an open beer in any hotel unless you are drinking it in your room or in the hotel bars. Alcohol is not allowed in function space in all hotels unless they are serving it. Most hotels will either tell you to go back to the bar with it. It you are drunk enough, the hotel may have to call the cops for public drunkeness.

There is always a quiet time (when most people are sleeping). That is between 2 AM and 10 AM. There will be the 24 hour areas open (game rooms and Jamspace). There will most likely not be any vendors or panels during those times. Those are times when you will actually get some sleep (not as sure about Magfest).

These are only from my previous experiences at other cons and as a long time fan. I am not as a member of Magfest staff.

tip

As it has already been stated, there is usually a little bit of quiet time during the wee morning hours, but if you do not want to wait for that and/or your roommates are loud, I really recommend bringing a pair of ear plugs. They're especially handy if you happen to get stuck in a room with a snorer or 2.

also

Also dont let people try to guilt you into not sleeping. If you are tired and want to sleep then sleep. Nothing wrong with being rested and getting more quality out of magfest then quantity. I happened to wake up around 7 am one of the days of magfest. It was dead. I wandered through each room. Only person in consoles was the desk person. In the video room I think a video was playing but it looked like everyone was asleep execpt for the staffer on duty. No one was in the dealer area. The table top guy was reading a book. In lan people were sleeeping under the tables. So magfest definitely sleeps. One thing about beers is and this is important DO NOT USE YOUR HOTEL ROOM SINK AS A COOLER. At magfest 7 (the most recient magfest) some people did that exact thing and the beers + ice + water weighed too much broke the hotel sink in their room. They ended up having to pay the hotel $550. So its much safer if you are going to have that much beer to just use the bath tub for that. Come find me and visit with me if you like. I will be a bald guy with a big blue drinking container (large blue mug).

That must have been A LOT of

That must have been A LOT of booze in the sink! We are able to bring a cooler from home to keep our beverages ice cold, that is another solution.

And I'll be the dude by the Japanese cabs with the large red thermos.

Wait, LAN people sleeping?

Are you talking about people staffing the LAN or the attendees in the LAN, because the last time I checked in the MAGFest Code of Conduct:

No sleeping in the lobby or hotel hallways is allowed. MAGFest is reasonably tolerant if you nod off at your computer, but you may not use festival areas as a replacement for a hotel room. MAGFest reserves the right to remove a participant from a festival room for sleeping.

Is the LAN area a festival room?

we allow the individual

we allow the individual departments to enforce the sleeping rules as strictly as they want. the LAN room guys dont really mind people napping at their computers, but magfest in general still reserves the right to wake people up whenever we want. if you plan on sleeping at your computer the whole time, you will probably get booted by our security guys. dont plan on it. at least find some floor space in someones hotel room, and get a shower. =]
