I live on the other side of the Beltway and would have easy access to Metro. There is a bus from the Van Dorn metro station right to the hotel. Obviously, a room in the hotel would be best but I can't afford it and it would be hard to justify the cost. Is it still worth it to get a pass if I have to commute?
absolutely not
You dont need to have a room at all. It is not ideal to have to commute but if you have to then you have to. I know a guy in baltimore that will likely be commuting. So its not a big deal to commute.

Oh it's absolutely worth the cost! Everything runs 24 hours, and there are great concerts and panels going on all 4 days.

I commuted to MAGFest 4 since I live in Charlottesville. Commuting might not be the best option due to how MAGFest is just always going, but if you can't afford a hotel room or don't want to get one, it works. The only hard part is remembering that you have to leave when you're both conscious and sober enough to drive home. If it's the only way, so be it.

I don't drink booze, so I should be fine.
I've commuted to MAGFest 6 and 7.
Because I could not even reserve a hotel room until I was 21. Now this time I'm commuting because I can't afford a hotel room.

if you don't have the money to get a room yourself, look into spliting a room. There are a few posts on the roomshare board, including my own :)

Blame my parents.
My dad does not mind, but my mom. She'll go stark raving mad, and she was concerned about me sharing a room at a anime convention with a friend a one month ago. (The actual room sharing arrangement, that never happened in the end)
ah
That really sucks, but I definitely feel you. For my first few conventions my parents would not even let me stay after midnight, guess they just don't want to admit their babies are old enough to take care of themselves.
Well, if you find a way to convince your parents otherwise, I'm sure there are loads of people that wouldn't mind letting you sleep in their room
