Hello fellow MAGfest-ers!
I am a brit who really wants to come to MAGfest but I have a few questions before I register/calculate spending/etc
*I had some other questions but I just checked the Canadian guy's thread*
1. We Brits are tight-fisted by nature, so I would like to volunteer for the event.
Do you need to show previous event volunteering experience (as I have experience in it, or I wouldn't ask)?
2. Which is the nearest airport to the Hotel? The Reagan National Airport? If so, what's it called? I admit I couldn't find it on ShermansTravel...
3. I've never to been to North American before. How much on average would a meal be around the area? It's a crappy general question, but I have to ask.
4. Are there any other Brits that go to MAGfest?
Thanks in advance!
#1 - no, anyone can
#1 - no, anyone can volunteer. if you've never worked at magfest before, you have to pay for your badge first, then we reimburse you once you work your required hours.
#2 - yes, national (DCA) is the closest. dulles (IAD) is also pretty close.
#3 - um... $6-12, depending on many things. definitely a very general question. =]
but you dont need to worry. if you staff, we feed you. if you're really tight on cash, you can almost skate thru magfest for free by staffing. check out the details on the 'volunteer' link.
#4 - i cant name any offhand, but i'm pretty sure we get a few.
Thanks! CheapOair has some
Thanks!
CheapOair has some staggeringly cheap flights available at the minute. So cheap that I'll have to get someone to check that it's real.
More questions!
What time/day is best to arrive and leave at, do you know? The event commences on Dec 31st, so I'm wondering if it's worth getting an evening flight on the 30th to arrive morning/mid-day on the 31st. Like Aerosmith I don't want to miss a thing. Likewise, would the evening of the 4th be the best time to leave, or is 'stuff' still a-happening?
Also: when are volunteers scheduled to begin/be filled in/whatever? I'd still love to volunteer. Helping people, listening to music, playing games and building my CV all at the same time!
Thanks a lot for your time and information. When going to a foreign country there are never too many stupid questions to ask.
i've seen round trips from DC
i've seen round trips from DC to london as low as $300. good luck with that.
no idea when to arrive and leave if you're talking about travel. if you're talking about staffing magfest... we'll definitely have a use for you starting around noon on the 31st, and ending sometime around 5 pm on tuesday the 5th. before and after those times, there's usually more work to do, but its more erratic. within about 24 hours of start and end, theres lots to do for everyone.
volunteers can come and go any time at all, you just need to have enough time to work enough hours for whatever benefits you want.
As far as your flight
As far as your flight information goes, I would personally suggest Regan National (DCA). I've been there and to Dullas International airport and personally prefer National. It's always been a quicker experience getting in and out as I've used it anyway. Anyone may feel free to correct me though if I'm just some outlier.
Meals here (if you decide to leave Magfest grounds anyway) aren't too bad. America loves fast food and you will not need to go anywhere close to out of your way to find something. You'll end up spending $7 to $20 depending on where/what you eat. More restaurant-like places tend to be in the upper range of that spectrum, but you can expect to not pay any more than $20 unless you go for a lobster tail dinner.
