I mentioned this at the feedback panel during magfest, but I noticed at magfest, that while there was a lot of emphasis on performance in relation to music, there wasn't much composing going on.

So because of that, I think it would be cool to have a room dedicated to music composition. Maybe 5-10 computers with a variety of different DAWs and programs. People could come in and use them during magfest to be able to compose something while under the influence of magfest.

Some possible ideas I was brainstorming in relation to this.

-There would need to be headphones for the computers being used to create music.
-There should be speakers set up to loop finished pieces
-There should be one computer dedicated to being able to sit down with headphones and listen to some of the tracks.
-Maybe a contest to create a magfest theme, or maybe something like best remix of a certain song.
-I was thinking if the contest idea happens maybe the winning song could be featured in the closing ceremony?
-If we get enough tracks made, I was thinking an online or physical(If practical) album could be created as a sort of magfest soundtrack. As far as copyright, when you finish a song you'd be asked if it could be used and maybe sign something.

So that's what I have so far. If you have ideas or equipment that would help this let me know. Also I think magfest has an irc some where but I can't seem to find any info. So if you have that, that would be cool as well.

Does anyone want to contact 8BC regarding this? It would be interesting to see chiptunes get a more organized space, and stage... One would imagine M11 could get some seriously good acts.

This would be perfect for One Hour Compo (http://compo.thasauce.net/compos/view/OHC) and lead into actually having a reason for an OHC panel. There hasn't really been a good way to do this yet. Something to think about!

Kylethedarkn -- I really like this idea of a composition room, and would like to toss in some ideas of how it might work.

1. This could be a smaller room with several workstation areas, each with headphones (or perhaps require people to bring their own headphones). That is, no speakers/monitors, so different groups of composers working independently won't bother each other. If we can't get enough equipment donated for this cause, then maybe just ask people to bring their own, but sign-up for a time slot, and be willing to share.

2. The room would be locked overnight or when it is unoccupied, to secure the equipment -- unless someone can staff the room 24 hours / day. Hoping to have enough volunteers to staff this room seems unlikely, considering that something like it hasn't been done before. So maybe just limit the hours of operation to a few hours each day.

3. Have sign-up sheets or a schedule where people can reserve a spot in advance, but still allow for others to join-in spur-of-the-moment (like someone passing-by that decides to get in on the action).

4. I also like the one-hour compo (composition) link by starla. Along those lines, how about every two hours or so, everyone who signed-up to be present starts a new composition (unless you're with a group already working on one -- in which case, y'all can continue working on your existing project).

This fourth point is mainly to encourage collaboration. Sure, solo composers can do their thing, but I think it would be more fun to try working with others, sharing ideas, etc. And the limited time frame causes the group to focus on getting something done.

5. The compositions belong to whover makes them, but after MAGFest is concluded, the songs can be assembled into a CD for distribution as long as all the composers agree to it. Perhaps make that distribution agreement a prerequisite for anyone using the music composition room, so the understanding is there from the start.
